Pro-Class: Dance Open Training with Rachel and Daliah @ Open Source Arts | England | United Kingdom

Class Description:
Mathilde (Rachel Dean, Daliah Toure, Marie Andersen, Seth Bennett and Oliver Dover) were a collective of five improvisers who integrated movement and sound, creating spontaneously composed performance which was intricate, human and communicative. This session offers the opportunity for movers and musicians to try out some of the scores and working methods developed by the collective over the years they worked together and perhaps make connections for future development of improvised performance in Leeds.

Facilitators:
Rachel Dean is a contemporary dance artist based in Leeds who performs, teaches and choreographs. She has a particular interest in Contact Improvisation and collaboration with other artists and art forms. Her choreography has included Wolf, a solo Little Red Riding Hood, Love in Idleness, a Midsummer dance theatre performance which toured gardens and parks in Summer 2012, Nativity, a Christmas solo exploring the enduring power of the myth and magic of the Virgin Mary, The Train Pulled Out, The Light Pulled In, a site-specific work created in the National Railway Museum with undergraduates from York St John University and Entwined, a dance theatre piece performed by a dressmaker and a dancer. She is passionate about sharing her love of dance and teaches Contact Improvisation and creative dance to various groups including dance undergraduates, open adult groups, adults with learning disabilities and professional dancers. She teaches regularly at Yorkshire Dance, Independent Dance, Improvisation Exchange, Mind the Gap, CoActive Wakefield, York St John University and Northern School of Contemporary Dance. Rachel has an MA Creative Practice (Dance Professional Pathway) from Laban and Independent Dance and a BPA (Hons) from the Northern School of Contemporary Dance. She is currently an Associate Lecturer at University of Lincoln. http://racheljanedean.wordpress.com

Daliah Toure is a Leeds based dance artist and is a senior lecturer at York St John University. Over the years she has been involved in a number of projects which have nurtured her interest in collaborative processes, multi-disciplinary work, installation performances and improvisation as performance. She has worked with Florence Peake, Rachel Dean, Gerry Turvey, Kathinka Walter, Gary Clarke, Rita Marcalo and Manuela Berndt and visual artist Aldo Tambellini as part of a retrospective at the Tate Modern in 2012. As an artist she is most passionate about engaging physically with a range of devising processes and scores; instant composition; movement and sound/voice exploration and working on cross-disciplinary projects.
She is a graduate of the Northern School of Contemporary Dance (2006) and completed an MA in Performance, Culture and Context at the University of Leeds in 2013. She is a co-founder of Improvisation Exchange (2007).
