Field Recording and Soundscape Composition Weekend Workshop with Rob Mackay

Award winning sound artist and composer Rob Mackay will lead an introductory session in field recording and soundscape composition. He will give hands-on practical experience on a recording excursion in the vicinity of Open Source Arts and other Leeds locations, before going on to to give an introduction to sound editing and manipulation. The workshop will also include a brief overview of some of his projects, including his current work creating a programme for BBC Radio 3’s Between the Ears, following the extraordinary 3,000 mile migration of monarch butterflies between Canada and Mexico each year.

Rob’s recent projects have moved towards a cross-disciplinary approach, including soundscape ecology, audiovisual installation work, and human-computer interaction. His work has been performed in 18 countries (including broadcasts on BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 1 and Radio France), and a number of his pieces have received international awards (Bourges, Hungarian Radio, La Muse en Circuit). He is director of HEARO (Hull Electroacoustic Resonance Orchestra), and is currently Chair of UKISC (UK and Ireland Soundscape Community). More information at https://robmackay.net.

Saturday:

We’ll start off with an introduction to field recording and the different creative approaches to the act of recording itself. We’ll look at the principles of acoustic ecology and soundscape ecology, putting into practice some ‘ear-cleaning’ exercises, including a sound walk.

We’ll go outside to two different locations close to Open Source Arts, to capture sounds using a range of techniques, including different stereo configurations, binaural recording, ambisonics (for 3D immersive audio), as well as use of contact mics and hydrophones for underwater recording.

We’ll then review and discuss the recordings, preparing for editing the next day.

Sunday:

This session will focus on sound editing, and the potential for creative outputs such as soundscape compositions, sound installations, and sound design with potential for a range of applications such as radio, games, and film. We’ll also look at how to create online soundmaps for both recorded and live streamed sounds.

I’ll also discuss a range of my own projects covering compositions, installations, and online projects, including my current work creating a programme for BBC Radio 3’s Between the Ears, following the extraordinary 3,000 mile migration of monarch butterflies between Canada and Mexico each year.
