After a summer-shaped break, Motion is BACK!

Motion is a series of concerts which aims to provide a space for improvised performance across multiple disciplines, including (but not limited to): music, dance, physical theatre and performance art.

Come to see performers take dives into the depths of the unknown; voyage into creative waters unchartered; journey into the outer regions of imagination, to find new sounds, spaces, movements and forms.

The debut of a new ensemble.

Matthew Bourne

Matthew Bourne is a recipient of numerous awards and accolades, and possesses an inventive and unique artistic approach for: bringing infirm pianos back to life in Songs From A Lost Piano, collaborating with classical musicians of the London Sinfonietta in Written/Unwritten, the acclaimed solo piano album, Montauk Variations; and reinterpretations of Amon Tobin’s work for Ninja Tune. Other projects include Radioland; a live reworking of Kraftwerk’s Radio-Activity album (in collaboration with Franck Vigroux & Antoine Schmitt), solo synthesiser album moogmemory; and Isotach, Bourne’s latest piano & cello album for The Leaf Label. Bourne’s work has appeared on compilations by Bonobo and Hot Chip, and recently featured in Paolo Sorentino’s lastest film LORO. Bourne’s current musical focus is with pianist Keith Tippett – and are performing a series of two-piano concerts together throughout 2019/2020.


James Mainwaring

James Mainwaring is a saxophonist and composer based in Leeds. Best known for his work with the Mercury Prize nominated Roller Trio and Tipping Point who have been described in the Guardian as “playful, dark, skilful and spontaneous… a surefooted trip across many persuasions in contemporary music’.


Emil Karlsen

Emil Karlsen is a young drummer/improviser based in Leeds. He is active on the improvised music scene establishing himself as a new original voice. He is seen across the UK with various large and small ensembles ranging from being a solo performer to percussionist in the London Improvisers Orchestra, as well as being a busy performer he also runs noumenon – a label for improvised music.
