In a 5Rhythms class with Ben Deutsch you are invited to:
- Pay more attention to your body and to the physical sensations of movement.
- To use movement to clearly express yourself, letting what’s happening inside of you shape your body.
- To release your ideas of what dance is and what movements are appropriate or inappropriate.
- To allow the possibility that you have always known how to dance, that you do not have to work at it.
- To land with full awareness in each unfolding moment.
Ben will gently encourage you to explore all these possibilities, using music and words chosen to fit the moment. You will be guided to pay attention to each part of the body first of all, and then to explore the rhythms of Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness.
No prior knowledge or experience of dance is required. All human experience is welcome.
You have permission, and are encouraged, to pay as much attention to your body’s own rhythm and tempo as to the music or any other external stimulus. There is no need to push yourself, and no need to hold yourself back. People of all ages, body-types and physical abilities take part in these classes.

Class time: Friday 6:30pm (UK time)
The class begins at 6:30pm on Fridays and is approximately 90 minutes.
The format of the class is evolving – there will be time to move and time to talk, some parts of the class will have music, some parts won’t, accredited 5Rhythms teacher Ben Deutsch will hold the space and offer guidance as appropriate.
Before we start, please clear some space for yourself to move in, have some drinking water to hand, make sure you’re wearing comfortable clothing, and ask other people in your home not to disturb you.
We’ll be able to see each other through the video link, but you don’t need to be facing the screen or the camera all the time.
* The class is held online using Zoom video conferencing. This works on Windows, Mac and Linux computers and on Android or Apple smart phones or tablets. If you are unsure how to use it, visit their website at https://zoom.us/
* We ask all participants to have their camera switched on and to dance mainly where they are visible to the camera. This helps to build trust, since all participants can see each other and know that they are seen.
* Please don’t take any screenshot or recording of the class.
* Please respect other participants by keeping anything they share during the class confidential.
* You are responsible for your own safety in the space where you dance. Please make sure that you have removed anything that you could tread on or trip over.
* Please do not take alcohol or recreational drugs prior to the class, or during the class.
* Wear clothes that you will be comfortable moving in.
* Have water to hand and drink it whenever you need to.
* Ask your family or housemates to give you uninterrupted time during the class (or ask them to join in).
Sound quality and volume – if you find that sound quality is poor during the class, the following tips may help:
* Connect your device to external speakers or to your home stereo. That way you’ll have more control over the volume in your own room, and probably get better quality sound than you would from the device’s bulit-in speaker.
* If you connect to the internet using a cable, rather than a wireless connection, that will almost certainly improve the quality of your connection.
* If other people in your home are using the Internet at the same time (especially if they are also streaming video and sound) then that may affect the quality of your connection. See if you can negotiate to use the Internet at different times from each other.
* Close any other programmes or apps that are running on your device, which may be using Internet
