Come and discover the joy you can get from releasing trapped muscle tension in your body and freeing yourself to move better. Somatics is a movement form similar to Yoga and Pilates in that it is largely performed lying on a mat. However, it has its own special movements that are very gentle and accessible to anyone, yet powerful in releasing patterns of holding that we so often find ourselves in from the way we live in modern life. It goes to the root of your muscle pain: your brain and the way that it senses and controls muscles.
So, this workshop is for you if you get a lot of shoulder and neck pain or lower back pain, perhaps from long hours sitting and looking at computer screens or driving. You will learn the 3 main holding patterns as identified by the creator of Somatics, Thomas Hanna. But most importantly you will learn how to move out of the holding patterns. Somatics is also very much about developing awareness of what is going on in your body and why you are feeling how you do. Only if you can sense it can you then understand how to change it.
Somatics teaches you to release full body patterns of muscular tightness that compromises your ability to move efficiently and easily. These patterns present themselves as back pain, neck/shoulder pain, TMJ, sciatica, scoliosis, leg length discrepancy and other common muscle pain conditions.
The workshop will be led by Somatic Movement Educator Ian Young. It will be a practical and experiential movement class where you will get to experience many different movements and understand why you are doing them and what the benefits are.
You should leave the class feeling more in tune with your body, moving more freely and energised as you are no longer wasting energy holding muscles that don’t need to be held tight any longer. You will also be equipped to perform these exercises regularly at home, the way to really start to feel the benefits of Somatics.
So if you want to be more in tune with your body, have more energy and move more freely then come and experience the delicious movements of Somatics!
Wear comfortable clothing to move in. We provide Yoga mats for this workshop. You may wish to bring a notebook and pen to record your experiences or take notes but you will be mainly experiencing and feeling them in your body.
A bit about facilitator Ian:
Ian came to the movement world through his own personal journey with arthritis and discovering first Pilates and then Hanna Somatics about 10 years ago. He used a walking stick for 20 years but working with both these movement forms has improved so much that he no longer needs one! For the last 4 years he has been training as a Somatic Movement Educator and has been running classes for 2 years. He has recently also started teaching Pilates and has experience of the Franklin Method and uses elements from each in his teaching. He passionately believes that we can all move to improve and when not teaching can often be found dancing!
