Since July 2019, Open Source Arts have been actively involved in administering a small grants programme as part of Kirkstall Valley Grants for local projects that benefit environment and quality of life in the Kirkstall Valley (which includes the neighbourhoods of Armley, Bramley, Burley, Horsforth, Kirkstall and Rodley).

We offer grants of £250 to up to four projects each quarter, but, more than that, we aim to connect the projects with support and inspiration from the local community. To get that off to a good start, we always award the grants at an interactive event, where each award winner has a chance to discuss the idea behind the project with other members of the community. We encourage an approach of “supportive questioning”, to help get people’s ideas clear and to get a sense of how their project fits into the bigger picture of community life.

Our awards winning ideas for February 2020 came from two schools and two individuals:

Featherbank Primary School are creating a forest classroom near their school. To help make the space accessible for all classes and all teachers, their funding request was for a trolley that could be used to easily transport teaching materials to and from the forest classroom.

Hollybush Primary School are also encouraging outdoor activities by creating a “tranquility garden” containing edible plants. They requested money to help with building raised beds, and buying soil and seeds to get them started.

Sam will be offering workshops on making reusable food wraps and other household products that we might normally buy in a disposable and packaged version.

Amanda will be running upcycling craft sessions that will help people to save furniture or other items that might otherwise wind up in landfill. The sessions will also provide a space for building friendships between people from different parts of the local community.

Our next round of funding will be in April 2020, applications should be received by 15th April. If you have a great idea, then apply online at https://forms.gle/k2JLZp639HA55nL97 or give us a call on 0113 2478975 if you have any questions.
